Methodology
The
survey gathered data on children's food and nutrient intake,
physical activity levels and physical measurements. Initially, a
face-to-face interview conducted with parents and children gathered
information on the participating child's food intake over the last
24 hours. This 24-hour food recall was repeated 1-3 weeks later via
a follow-up telephone interview. The physical activity level of
children aged over five years was determined by the child wearing a
pedometer for one week. Children aged nine years and over were also
required to complete a 48-hour activity recall. The physical
measurements collected were height, weight and waist circumference.
Some demographic data, such as age, parental work, ethnicity and
socioeconomic status were collected to provide an insight into the
child's home environment.
Data collection for the survey occurred between February - August 2007. Over 4,440 children from each state and territory in Australia participated in the survey. The children were aged between 2-16 years. The children were selected randomly from households with a fixed line telephone.
